A closed terrarium needs hardly any upkeep. It pretty much looks after itself, but here are a few helpful tips to make things easier for you:
- Avoid watering. We can't stress this enough. Your terrarium is smart enough to generate its own condensation as long as the lid is kept closed. An occassional misting after you wipe the inside of the glass from excess moisture is enough. In general, we water our terrariums only ONCE A YEAR.
- Terrariums thrive in various light conditions but the best way to guarantee its survival even in the darkest corners of the room is by using a terrarium lamp with 6000-watt terrarium lamp. This way, you're providing it enough light without burning the plants or moss. The extreme opposite of this would be placing your terrarium where it gets direct sunlight. This will cause too much condensation in your terrarium, as if it's creating its own sauna which will kill your moss or plants.
- It's normal that some leaves may wilt or die (this cycle is similar to our ecosystem) remove these leaves using a terrarium tool and wait patiently for your plants to produce new leaves.
- Trim plants that are overgrown and do not fit it's container anymore. Most of these trimmed cuttings can then be planted into a new terrarium.
- Springtails! All our closed terrariums are bioactive meaning they contain small isopods or springtails (also known as Chvostoskoci or Collembola) these tiny insects are your most helpful friend and cleaning crew inside the terrarium. They won't harm or bite. They only eat the mold inside the terrarium helping it to be healthy and they are an essential element for your miniature ecosystem to work.
Keep all of these guides in handy and your terrarium can be a family heirloom that will outlive you and the generations to come.
